DO YOU WORK FOR A BULLY?
When you are full of activity all the time, you are under the dictatorship of the urgent. You are working for a bully, and its name is Busyness. You’re full with motion all day long. Your work-life and life-life are daunting. You have many responsibilities, you are important, you are needed, and you’re moving at the speed of light. Does this sound like you? Do you want a change?
If you are worn-out from your manager, Busyness, I have a few ideas. Work on just one a week and you’ll soon be your own boss, Poised Competence.
Anti-busyness tips:
- Re-examine your activities. Which ones are moving you to your goal of being a high achieving, smart working individual? Jabbing at everything is a time killer. Thoughtful, regular evaluation of your tasks is very productive.
- Turn off the techno-gadgets. Schedule a block of focus time each day to work on your highest priority items, one at a time. Eliminate interruptions, human and electronic, for an hour or two per day. Multitasking is a time killer. Being focused is very productive.
- When things heat up and you feel yourself spinning out of control, push your reset button. Stop to think. Swinging and flailing to balance yourself is a time killer. Calm, intentional movement is very productive.
- Give in to the experts. How much of what you have to do is taking you away from what you want to do? Target routine tasks that you hate or aren’t good at. They’re the ones you regularly put off. Hire or barter to get those jobs away from you. Procrastinating and bungling are time killers. Doing what you’re designed to do is very productive.
If you are burning the candle at both ends, day in and day out, you will light up the room, for sure. Very quickly, though, you will snuff yourself out. For staying power, effectiveness, and to be recognized by people in high places, be an example of a composed, skilled professional. Do your job without the drama of busyness.
